My 12-year-old adopted child caught a frog yesterday. Actually, it looked like a toad to me, but he insists that it is a frog named Phil, so I’ll stick with calling the amphibian a frog.

If I had been the parent on duty, I would have answered my adopted child’s pleas to keep the frog as a pet with a resounding NO!!!! A husband, special needs child, two dogs, job, and house are enough responsibility for me at this stage of my life, thank you very much. But, alas, hub was the parent on duty and helped our adopted child find a shoebox and fix it up to accommodate a frog.

My child kept the frog in the shoebox in his room overnight. At 5:00 a.m., I heard this very loud noise through my wall into his room, despite both of our doors being closed. My child tried to blame the noise on the dog, but it happened again even after I walked and fed the dogs, leaving them downstairs in their crates.

When my adopted child got up, he announced that he was going to let the frog go. He plans to save up his money, buy the frog what it needs (insects to eat, a better “house” than a shoebox, etc.) and then catch the frog again when he has a proper home for it.
